Did I Mention There's A Sequel? Plus Giveaway

This scene foreshadows the next book in this trilogy, Off The Clock, which arrives later this month:)

“Lisa was telling me about it.  She said the restaurant is open, but not the rest?  Something about it being part charity, part club, part teenage hangout?  And Austin Harmon owns it?”

Brian drained his cup.  “Yes.  Remember how Austin used to get into so much trouble, and spent time in juvenile hall? He won the lottery last year and decided to provide a safe place for kids to hang out so he bought some acreage and began building last fall.  The kids can take golf lessons, tennis lessons, swim in the pool, shoot hoops, play soccer, and get homework help –basically, anything they could want or need.  He’s not going to turn anyone away because of their income level.”

“That’s a fantastic idea,” Natalie exclaimed.  “How about transportation from school?”

“He’s hired one of the bus drivers.  A lot of the programs are still in the experimental phase.”  Brian stood up and fished his cell phone from the pocket of his shorts.  “I’ll give him a call and see if he’s open tonight.”

“It’s Sunday and late,” she objected.  “I don’t want to bother him.”

“Nat…he’s a friend.  He won’t mind.”  Brian had already dialed and was listening to the music in his ear.  “Austin?  How are you?”

London 1871

“Pardon me?”

The starch in Mrs. Wickham’s black dress seemed to wilt as she quivered. The soft folds of her jowls shook. “The Duchess is not coming down, Your Grace,” she repeated.

The Duke of Wexford stood stock-still. The guests were to descend on his ancestral home in a matter of moments. The candles lit, the buffet laid, the flowers had bloomed on cue. The last remaining detail was the receiving line.

“Mrs. Wickham. There is a small matter of greeting two hundred and fifty guests arriving momentarily. The Duchess needs to attend them,” Blake Sanders, the Eighth Duke of Wexford said sternly to his housekeeper.

When the woman had announced his wife would not be joining him Sanders was certain he had not heard correctly. She knew her duties, as did he.  He turned abruptly to the staircase and stopped as a shiver trailed down his arms. He turned back. The rotund woman had not moved other than the flitting of small hairs peeking out of her mobcap.  After twenty-five years of service to his family he supposed she stood rooted for good reason.

The Duke spoke quietly. “Is there a problem conveying this message, Mrs. Wickham?”

The woman swallowed. “Yes, Your Grace. There is.”

“What is it Mrs. Wickham?” he asked.

It was then he noticed a folded piece of paper in the woman’s hand. As with most lifetime retainers, he had seen worry, seen anger and joy in her face. But never fear. And it was fear indeed that hung in the air, widened her eyes and had the missive shaking in pudgy fingers.

A lifetime later, in his memory, he would envision the slow transfer of this note as it made its way from her hand to his. The moments stretched out when life was sure - before he read it. With the reading, life changed, flopped perversely like some great beached sea turtle. So memory or God or mind’s protection lengthened the seconds until he read.

In the present, he snatched the note, unfolded it and recognized his wife’s script. He dared not glance at the still present servant.  Blake Sanders read to the final line, folded the paper neatly and met Mrs. Wickham’s eyes. Had he been six he may have hurled himself in the great black comfort of her skirts. But he was not a boy.

“The contents of this note, I gather you read?” he asked.

The mobcap nodded. “Twas open and laying on Your Grace’s pillow.”

“Very well,” he replied and stared at the ornate wall sconce and the shadows the candles threw. The butler’s distant voice broke through his emotional haze. He knew he must ready himself for the onslaught of guests but not before he made clear his wishes with Mrs. Wickham.

“We must be certain the Duchess is left alone with such a malady.” His eyes met hers with a dark intensity. “You will be the only one in her attendance tonight.”

“Yes, Your Grace.” The housekeeper nodded to leave and turned back with tears in her great gray eyes. “The children, Your Grace? What if . . .?”

“I will handle the children tonight, Mrs. Wickham,” he answered.

She nodded and hurried away.

The composure he had been born with, cultivated and that now ruled his life, wavered as he slowly made his way down the staircase to his butler. Briggs stood sentry near the newel post as he had done for as long as anyone could remember.

Excerpt #2 from Twinned Universes--and a Giveaway!

Yvonne hesitated, then laid her hand over Paul's. “Christians aren’t perfect, just forgiven.”
“Do you forgive non-Christians?”
“Depends on what for.”
If he turned, his lips would be centimeters from hers. “I don’t know, Yvonne. What do I need your forgiveness for? I mean, it’s not like—”
Paul stopped as he remembered the flowers he hadn’t gotten rid of, his mother in the hospital bed, the coffin at the funeral.
“Not like what?”
Yvonne was lucky. She wasn’t responsible for her mom’s death. Her mom was still alive.
Wet heat registered on Paul’s arm. He jerked away as steam came out of the kettle.
Yvonne turned off the stove and pointed toward a couple of cups. But before he could get them, she touched his shoulder.
“It’s not your fault that your mom was killed.” She spoke as if she’d read his mind.
He stared at the cups, a cheerful red and green. Wasn’t it too early for Christmas? “It is too.”
“You had no idea who you were or what your great-uncle planned to do.”
Paul wished it was that easy. Maybe it was for her, but he didn’t share her faith. Even her kind words couldn’t wash away the sludge in his soul whenever he thought of Mom. Part of him wished he could just weep everything out onto Yvonne’s shoulders, but then she’d think him weak.
“It doesn’t matter.” He turned away and reached for the cocoa. “We were going to figure out how to save Sean, remember?”
“We haven’t finished talking about you yet.”
“Well, I am.”
She snatched the green cup away before he could add the cocoa powder for her. Even in the dimly lit kitchen, her eyes burned fiercely.
He cleared his throat. “‘Doubt that the stars are fire—’”
She held up her hand. “‘I had rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me.’”
Damn. She had to be pissed to sting him with his beloved Shakespeare.
“If you really loved me, Paul Lyon Harrison, you wouldn’t use someone else’s words. You’d share your feelings with me.”
“I do—”
“I thought you wanted to talk about Sean.” Yvonne’s voice stole the warmth from his drink.
Fine. Be that way. Powder scattered on the counter as he stirred his cocoa too hard. The bulge in his pants refused to settle down. “Sean doesn’t want to be told, and I don’t think it’ll help matters if we do tell him. Baby knows, but she might not be able to keep Sean from going to the concert. The real problem is Joseph. We have to convince him to leave Sean alone, not just at the concert, but afterward.”
“So I have to find out if the travelers are brainwashing him,” Yvonne said. “If I can get a blood sample from him, I can test it with Dr. Stern’s equipment. But how do I find him in such a big city?”
“Easy. He’s a guard at the Museum of Science and Industry. If we wander around there long enough, you’ll find him. I know he likes talking to visitors, especially beautiful girls. You shouldn’t have a problem.”
Her cheeks darkened. “Dr. Stern told me the blood analysis takes several hours. I can’t give him the antidote until I know for sure the travelers have been drugging him. It could mess up his brain chemistry otherwise.”
It’s got to be screwed up anyway. Paul kept that to himself and said, “Is that going to be enough? I mean, if the travelers have been feeding him ‘Sean is evil’ messages for a long time, will one dose of antidote change his mind?”
“It’ll help, but I don’t know for sure.” Yvonne shook her head. “I should have asked Dr. Stern while I had the chance. It’s hard not being able to contact her.”
“Then we have to go ahead on our own. It’s safest if we assume we have to teach Joseph that Sean’s OK.”
“I can talk to him—”
“Or I could practice my Sean impersonation on him once I get the holos.” Paul grinned. “It’s always good to do a dry run before you perform for your real audience.”
Yvonne grabbed his arm. “But—if he thinks you’re Sean—he might try to kill you instead!”
“He can’t do that in the museum!”
“Why not? If he’s a guard, he’ll have a weapon.”
“It’s in public!”
“So was Sean’s final concert,” Yvonne shot back.
Scalding cocoa splashed over Paul’s hand. “You really think Joseph would kill me instead of Sean?”
She nodded, eyes wide.
It didn’t matter anymore if she was attracted to him or not. “Then I’m screwed.”

Are Brian's Feelings Changing? And Giveaway

He tried to be casual about where he was headed; he stopped and joked with others, but his mind and his eyes kept returning to the honey-blonde mass of hair.  Nat had twisted it up in a knot on top of her head, but Brian felt himself growing hard, remembering how it had framed her face as she’d bent over him that morning.

Screw it…if they talk, they talk.  She’s going back tomorrow anyway; what’s a little gossip going to hurt?  As long as she understands this isn’t going anywhere.  Brian switched tactics and intercepted her, motioning her over behind the enclosed shelter house a few yards away.

He made sure no one was looking and swung her into his arms for a thorough kiss, pressing his pelvis against hers.  He felt her soften as her arms crept around his neck.

“Wow Bri…what was that for?”  She smiled after they came up for air.

“Can’t a man kiss a beautiful woman for no reason?  Besides…your breasts are driving me crazy.”  Brian unbuttoned her sleeveless shirt and placed kisses on the gentle curves above her bra cups.  He wasn’t satisfied, and pulled one taut nipple free to drink of her sweetness.  Suddenly he stopped and tugged both her bra and shirt back into place, gathering her close.  “Christ, Natalie…what the hell have you done to me?”

“What do you mean?”  Her words were muffled against his neck.

“I haven’t dragged a female behind a building since the time I kissed Beth Lewis behind the bleachers in the seventh grade.”  He kissed her again and stepped back to rebutton her shirt.  He took a deep breath.  “How much longer do we have to be here, anyway?”

A look of surprise crossed her face.  “People can leave at any time, but I thought you were supposed to stick around until everyone left.  Unless you put Sandy in charge today…she’s the one who pulled all the tables together and made sure this area was reserved.”

“Shit.  I forgot to thank her.”  Brian ran a hand through his dark hair and sighed.  “You’re right.  Will you hang around with me, or do you and Lisa have plans for tonight?”

“No; no plans.  I saw my parents yesterday afternoon, and left the evening wide open for any suggestions.”  Natalie bit her lip and clasped her hands together.

Brian lifted her chin with one finger so she looked him in the eye.  “Good.  How about room service at your hotel?”

Civil War Historical Romance Reconstructing Jackson

Hope everyone has had a wonderful Sunday and enjoyed all these posts as much as I have. The first chapter of my latest historical romance, Reconstructing Jackson, is below. Visit my website for more information and to sign up to receive the first notices of my new releases at www.hollybushbooks.com. I love to hear comments from readers and hope you'll follow my tour with Goddess Fish.

1867 . . . Southern lawyer and Civil War veteran, Reed Jackson, returns to his family’s plantation in a wheelchair. His father deems him unfit, and deeds the Jackson holdings, including his intended bride, to a younger brother. Angry and bitter, Reed moves west to Fenton, Missouri, home to a cousin with a successful business, intending to start over.

Belle Richards, a dirt poor farm girl aching to learn how to read, cleans, cooks and holds together her family’s meager property. A violent brother and a drunken father plot to marry her off, and gain a new horse in the bargain. But Belle’s got other plans, and risks her life to reach them.

Reed is captivated by Belle from their first meeting, but wheelchair bound, is unable to protect her from violence. Bleak times will challenge Reed and Belle's courage and dreams as they forge a new beginning from the ashes of war and ignorance.

May 19, 1867

“Need some help, mister?”

“I’ll be fine, thank you,” Reed Jackson said.

The conductor approached through whirls of black smoke and repeated, “Do ya need some help?”

The whistle blew as Reed replied. “I’m a cripple, not deaf, you jackass. I said I’d be fine.”

The conductor squinted through ashed air and hefted himself onto the train’s step. “OK, son,” he shouted.

The train pulled away and Reed struggled to pull his bag on to his lap and wheel himself to the step of the station house. A sign, swinging in the locomotive’s draft, read ‘Fenton, Missouri - Population 6,502.’

“Is there a boy about who can get my trunks to the hotel?” Reed shouted into the dim building. The scrawny station manager shaded his eyes as he stepped into the dirt street.

“Where ya be headin’?” he asked.

“The Ames Hotel,” Reed replied.

Reed contemplated the man who was now rubbing his jaw and eyeing his wheelchair; the last, hopefully, in a long line of nosy, prying half-wits whom Reed had encountered on this tortuous journey. The man knelt down and touched the leather strapping of the wheels.

“Please don’t touch the chair, sir,” Reed said.

He stood, eyes still perusing Reed and his belongings. “In the war?”

“Is there someone able to bring my trunks to the Ames Hotel?” Reed repeated.

“From the sound of that drawl, I’d bet my Helen’s berry pie, you was wearing gray,” the stationmaster added.

The man’s self-righteous smile did nothing to lighten Reed’s mood. He was tired, his leg hurt, and he wanted nothing more than complete and utter silence, followed by a long soak in a tub. But this was to be his new hometown. His fresh start. This imbecile may need his services as an attorney if he killed his pie-making wife, Reed thought.

“I served in the confederacy, sir.”

“Damn. I was right. A Johnny Reb, huh?”

“I consider myself a U.S. citizen,” Reed replied.

“Well, yeah but . . .”

“Excuse me,” Reed said as reached his hands to the wheels of his chair. “I must get to the hotel. I’m expected.”

The stationmaster turned as a man and woman approached. “Reed?” the man called.

“Henry.” Reed recognized his cousin from the remarkable likeness the man had to Reed’s mother. Tall and dark with great smiles marked the Ames family.

Guest Blog: 10 Things You Didn't Know About The Ace of Diamonds by Vogue

Book Synopsis:

Since his release from prison, Brookstone’s most notorious drug lord, Jay Santiago, has been hard at work rebuilding his life and empire. With two businesses under his belt and one in the making, Jay is readily known as one of New York’s elite men. While the root of his financial status lies in the newly rebuilt Santiago cartel, Jay is determined to expand his wealth. After reconnecting with an old comrade, he believes he has found the one thing that could increase his fortune and allow him to leave behind the dangers of his criminal enterprise for good. However, as Jay’s new business venture begins to come to fruition, he quickly learns the one material object he loves the most could lead to his biggest downfall yet.

10 Things You Didn’t Know About The Ace of Diamonds

1. The current version of The Ace of Diamonds is actually the third draft of the book. The original version followed teenage character, Kristian Kane’s experience pledging a collegiate sorority. The second version is very similar to the current version; however, there were a lot of cliffhangers. The entire project took about two years to complete.

2. The physical appearance of character Shawn Blumington, the novel’s antagonist, was inspired by The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera.

3. The restaurant, Old Town Bistro, in the novel is inspired by a real restaurant located in downtown Rock Hill, South Carolina.

4. Chapter One of the book takes place in Dallas, Texas because when I first started working on The Ace of Diamonds, I was in Dallas for two weeks visiting my aunt and wanted the city to be a part of the novel.

5. Without giving away too many details regarding a twist in the plot, I incorporated my personal life into the book by sharing my thoughts and emotions following the death of one of my parents. This scene was very difficult to write because I had to revisit the memory; however, it was also very therapeutic.

6. A new fashion collection is introduced in The Ace of Diamonds entitled Fresh Prince. Although it shares the same name as the popular comedy show, starring Will Smith, the collection’s name was actually not influenced by the show, but by the French novella, The Little Prince.

7. The cityscape on the front cover of the book is actually not New York, but Chicago, Illinois.

8. By now, most people are aware that Brookstone is not a real city in New York. However, a new city is introduced in the book, Copperton City, which is a fictional city in Georgia.

9. For three years, I worked as a residential counselor in a treatment facility for juvenile delinquents. During this time, I grew so accustomed to referring to my colleagues by their last name that it carried over into my books. This is the reason why some of my characters only have last names (i.e. Silvas, Sanders, Gomez, and Clement).

10. The Ace of Diamonds is the first release under my own imprint, Crown Jewelz Publishing.

The Ace of Diamonds is currently available in paperback and ebook at Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com.

The Danger Game: Excerpt + Giveaway

Last excerpt for today from The Danger Game...

“Are you going to tell me what’s going on?” Ben asked.
Flick looked at his reflection in the mirror.  “I don’t know.”
His face had a closed off look, and at her words a deep frown creased his forehead.  He folded his arms across his chest.
“What exactly don’t you know?”
“I don’t know who you are. That’s for certain.”
His eyes narrowed and a muscle jumped in his jaw.
“I think I should talk to the police.” She pushed past him, out of the bathroom, aware that they were alone.  “I’ll take them up to Andy’s office, they’ll need to know about it.”
“That sounds sensible.”
She glanced at him, but his face showed nothing but bland impassivity.
“It seems unreal to me. Like a bad dream.”
“Civilians always feel that way at first. Its normal.”
“Civilians?”
“People.” He shrugged.

Birthday Discovery and Giveaway

In this scene, Amber Johnson, owner of AJ's Cafe and heroine of the first book, All She Ever Wanted, makes a cameo appearance:)
Natalie fished in her purse for a pen. “I don’t know, Brian…what if I can’t make it back in January?”

Brian looked up in surprise. “You were born in January? What date?”

“The eighteenth.”

“No way…that’s my birthday!”

Natalie produced her driver’s license. “See?”

“I’ll be damned. I never knew that.”

“See there?” Amber broke in. “You come home and lunch is on the house.”

“Not dinner? I was hoping for that chicken and goat cheese dish you make. The one with the excellent sauce.”

“You don’t bring a special lady here for her birthday dinner.” Amber smacked his arm in a playful manner.
“You take her to Ruth Chris Steakhouse. Am I right?” She directed the question to Natalie, who agreed with her.

Brian looked sideways at both women. “Thanks, Amber. I really appreciate you telling us how to spend our birthday.”

Twinned Universes: Why Travel Back in Time--and a Giveaway!

Say you live in the middle of the 21st century. You're well off enough to have all the basics of life, plus the latest electronics, the ability to travel wherever you want, and access to the most sophisticated medicine ever. Why would you give that up to spend most of your life cramped in a spaceship shuttling between your universes and a Twentieth Century one?

For some people, going to the Twentieth Century (or TwenCen) is a chance to study the past directly, instead of just reading about it. They can meet famous people, such as the TwenCen musician Sean Lyon, or observe events unfold. Others might leap at the chance to see animals extinct in their time, like elephants. Some people will even bring back genetic samples of these animals so they can be resurrected. "The honeybees alone had revitalized agriculture and justified the cost of the space program," Paul Harrison thinks at one point during Twinned Universes.

For Paul Harrison's family, however, living on the spaceship Sagan isn't just about performing genetics research on TwenCen samples. They happen to have their own private sample of TwenCen DNA in Paul himself. Paul doesn't know it yet, but he's part of the Classic Rock Replication program. He's the clone of Sean Lyon, the clone Paul's great-uncle, Jack, desperately wants to mold into another Sean. Paul's mother desperately want to keep Paul out of her uncle's clutches so her son has a chance to develop his own identity. She thinks as long as she and her family stay on the Sagan most of the time, they'll be free of Jack's influence. Unfortunately, she's wrong.

Paul Harrison always wanted to play Hamlet, but he never expected he’d live the role first.

In the aftermath of a family tragedy on 21st century Earth, Paul discovers he’s the clone of Sean Lyon, his great-great-grandfather and a famous TwenCen musician. Suspecting his mother’s death was no accident, Paul comes up with a plan to trick the answers out of the great-uncle who had him cloned. But in order to make his plan work, Paul needs help from Sean himself—and Sean’s time is running out in the TwenCen universe next door. Although Paul’s family lives on the spaceship that travels between the universes, he’s never been allowed on TwenCen Earth. Now, with the help of his friends, his disguise-creating holoprojectors, and a quantum quirk, Paul must make his way to Sean while evading other time travelers who fear he’ll change the history of the TwenCen universe. If Paul is to achieve justice, he must not only risk his own life, but the wormhole connecting the universes. “To be or not to be” was a simple question in comparison....

Available now (in eBook and paper formats) on Amazon, B&N, and Smashwords.

Behind the Character: Jay Santiago of The Ace of Diamonds by vogue

Author Vogue gives a special insight on Jay Santiago of The Ace of Diamonds

Out of all the characters introduced in The Diamond Collection, it seems Jay Santiago is the most popular. I don't know if it’s his protective nature or the description of his looks, but he's definitely a fan favorite.

The name Jay Santiago came from a couple different places. I will start with his last name only because I've gotten the question if it came from The Coldest Winter Ever by Sistah Souljah. In that particular novel, the main character's last name is Santiaga. While The Coldest Winter Ever is one of my favorite books, I chose the name Santiago because it was of Spanish origin and I loved the way it sounded. It is just a coincidence the names are similar. As for his first name, I named the character after the rapper, Jay-Z. I have always admired his career as a business person and knew I wanted the main male character of The Diamond Collection to follow a similar path. In addition, most of Jay's businesses have connections to the color blue, which is heavily associated with the rapper Jay-Z (it’s rumored to be his favorite color). For example, the club, Sapphire, is named after a blue gemstone and the soul food restaurant, Blue Magic, is named after a song that appeared on Jay-Z’s American Gangster album called, “Blue Magic.”

LaLa Anthony
In terms of Jay’s background, he was born in the fictional Brookstone, New York to Hector and Lady Santiago who are both deceased at the beginning of the series. Both of his parents were born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico and moved to Brookstone, New York in their mid-twenties. Jay's father, Hector, is 100% Puerto Rican while his mother, Lady, is a black Puerto Rican (she was born and raised in Puerto Rico, but has some ancestry in Africa). The idea to make his mother black came from reading an article in Latina magazine that featured actress and reality TV personality, La La Anthony. In the article, she says:

A lot of people don’t realize that I’m Latina, which is fine. One thing about being Latina is that there isn’t one look that comes with the territory. I don’t expect people to know my cultural background just by glancing at me. I do, however, expect that when I tell people my family is from Puerto Rico, that I will be believed and not accused of trying to be something that I’m not. It usually goes something like this: a person having a conversation with me discovers one way or another that I’m Puerto Rican and fluent in Spanish. That person then expresses their shock over these realizations for any number of reasons—common responses are, “You don’t look Latina” and “I thought you were black!” I never said I wasn’t black. And since when does being black and being Latina have to be mutually exclusive?

This statement made me look at race, ethnicity and nationality in a whole different light and I wanted to somehow incorporate that into my novel. I chose to do it through Jay’s mother, Lady, and will explore the topic more in The Ace of Diamonds. If you want more of a visual of his parents, think along the lines of Raul Julia (The Addams Family) and Reagan Gomez-Preston.

Laz Alonso
When it comes to Jay’s physical appearance, several people have asked me to reveal who I see when I am writing about Jay, but I refuse to give up this secret (not even for Behind the Character!). However, I will give the list of names I commonly hear readers say they envision: Terrence Howard (I think it’s the eyes), Laz Alonso, and Michael Ealy. I must say, Jay Santiago, is a character who developed on his own. In the beginning, I had certain intentions for the character, but as I wrote, his character got somewhat watered down. Maybe, I was afraid to show how wild and crazy he really could get. If I had let my imagination run wild, his transition from kingpin to family man would be much greater. Of course, this is my own personal opinion.

Tidbits about Jay Santiago
-He doesn’t have a middle name.
-He is 6’5 and has beautiful hazel eyes.
-His hair is naturally curly, but he wears it closely shaven.
-He is an only child (currently).
-He has a high school diploma, but never attended college.
-He owns a home in San Juan, Puerto Rico where his personal butler, Silvas, lives.
-At the beginning of The Ace of Diamonds, he has three businesses under his belt, Sapphire, Blue Magic and is set to open Iceland, a jewelry store.

Blurb

When sexy, rich Lawrence Russo asks Mia to come and work for him in Italy for two weeks, she jumps at the chance. After all, it beats pole dancing, and the salary he offers her is practically obscene.

A relationship quickly begins to develop between the two, but Mia can't help but wonder if Lawrence's feelings for her are genuine or if he feels he's just paying for a service.

Even if their relationship is strong enough to survive her insecurities, what will happen when somebody from her past shows up and threatens to reveal her deepest, darkest secret?

Lucy looked around nervously. "What's wrong?" she asked.

"I…don't know," Mia admitted. Perhaps she was just being paranoid.

"Mia." She heard a familiar drawl coming from the shadows. Her heart raced in anticipation as she turned to see the speaker. He walked out of the shadows and toward them like a jaguar stalking his prey, but Mia didn't feel intimidated, only excited by his presence.

"You shouldn't go sneaking around in the darkness. You could give a girl a fright." Mia laughed.

"I could leave, if that would please you," he purred. She loved the way he emphasized please. He gave no indication that he was going to leave. Mia was glad.

"Er, maybe I'll just go wait around the corner," Lucy said awkwardly. Mia nodded to acknowledge her, feeling a little guilty, because she had actually forgotten Lucy was still there.

"So, what are you doing here?" Mia tried to seem nonchalant, despite the fact that her body was having some kind of chemical reaction to his presence.

As if from nowhere, the handsome man produced the bottle of champagne he had purchased earlier that night. "I do believe we have plans to share this." He took a step closer to her.

"Oh. I would, it's just we aren't supposed to socialize with the clients outside of the club," Mia said teasingly, although it was technically true.

"Tell me, Mia, do you always do what you're supposed to do?" It seemed as though he had expected her reaction.

"No, I guess not."

"I've been watching you, Mia."

"I've noticed." She took a step in his direction and looked challengingly into his dark eyes. "So, do you like what you see?"

They were close enough to touch, and Mia's every nerve was tingling, hoping to feel his fingers on her skin. He swayed forward and, for a moment, she thought he was going to kiss her, but he leaned toward her ear instead. "I have a business proposition for you," he breathed, sending a shiver through her body before he pulled away from her.

It took Mia a moment to compose herself, and his eyes sparkled with amusement, no doubt he was enjoying her confusion. "Business…a business proposition?" Mia attempted to sound as casual as she possibly could.

"I'm returning to my home in Tuscany tomorrow," he announced.

Mia felt her heart sink, but was determined not to let it show. "Oh, it must be beautiful in Italy this time of year. But what does that have to do with me?"

"I was hoping you would accompany me."

Train Station Bride - 1887  Julia Crawford, Boston debutante, corresponds with an aging shopkeeper and travels to South Dakota to marry him, hoping to escape the ridicule she endures as the plump, silly daughter of one of Boston’s premiere families. What happens when the train station groom is not who Julia bargained for? Will her secrets keep her from love and acceptance? Or will Julia’s love be strong enough to conquer her past and give her the future she’s always dreamed of?

Boston 1887

“Really, Julia, do hurry,” Jane Crawford said to her daughter still seated at the ivory lace-covered vanity. “The guests are arriving, and you should be there to greet them.”

Julia Crawford smiled up at her mother with resignation. This was a battle she did not need to win. She would make no argument.

“I’ll be down shortly, Mother. Jolene and Jennifer are there. Our guests are here to see them, not me. Has Jillian gone down?”

“She is standing with your father at the door,” her mother replied.

“I’ll be down in a moment, then. Do go down to the guests. You know how father fusses when you leave him alone,” Julia said as she spun a blonde curl around her finger.

Her mother glided to the door and closed it softly. Julia cocked her ear, waiting for the soft patter of her mother’s slippers on the steps. Only then did she pull the gold chain from her neck and insert the key that hung from it in a gilded jewel box.  With a final glance at her bedroom door, Julia pulled a white envelope from the case and unfolded the letter it held.

Dear Miss Crawford,

I will be at the train station to meet you on the appointed day. My mother and I look forward to your arrival. I will stay above my shop until the day of our marriage. My mother has graciously allowed you to stay with her during that time. She is pleased to know you do needlepoint. Her arthritic hands no longer allow her to sew, and she is most anxious to have another woman about. I am anxious as well . . .

Julia read to the last line even though she could have recited the letter as if it were the Lord’s Prayer. Very truly, Mr. Jacob Snelling.  The day would arrive for her to depart sooner than she both hoped and dreaded. Mr. Snelling was a successful shop owner, near fifty years old, with an aging mother in a small South Dakota town. He had never married. His mother had begun to complain of a lack of company, and he admitted he was lonely. Those two forces had led him to place an ad for a wife in the Boston Globe nearly a year ago. And to Julia’s shock she had answered it. Their correspondence had been proper, more formal than she had expected from a merchant in the Midwest.

That formality had been a great comfort to her. It was what she was accustomed to. And he sounded like a truly nice man. He had great regard for his mother, of that Julia was certain. His letters were filled with news of the aging Portentia Snelling and that always brought comfort to Julia when she was most terrified of what she was embarking on. A man so devoted to his own mother would certainly be kind to her. Julia rose from the vanity seat with a smile on her face. One more formal evening with her family could not deter her now.
Yep! That's me.  I would've been about five years old at that time.  That's a body aid strapped to my chest, today they are much smaller and fit behind the ear.  I was often teased and humiliated for wearing it as a kid.

That's one of the reasons why I chose to write a trilogy series based on my life featuring a teen with a hearing loss.  I wanted to share my story with the rest of the world to let others know that they are not alone.  My main focus was to provide a sense of hope and inspiration through messages incorporated into all three books.

However, there is one other factor that contributed to my decision to write about my life. Meeting Michael Buble, a famous Canadian singer, was a major turning point at the crossroads in my life.  On that fateful day, I was lost and unsure about my future and really insecure about myself.  When we stood face to face, he showed me what it was like to be showered with kindness and down-to-earth honesty.  To have someone like Michael hold my hand, gaze lovingly from head to toe ever so slowly and hear the words "You're beautiful" made me suddenly realize that I was important too.  And that changed me.  It was that chance meeting and the generous hug he gave me, that instilled a spark in me to seriously considering following my dreams.  Thank you Michael for being so kind to me and showing me the path that I should take.

Excerpt:

Jay focused the conversation on the real reason he had come to Dallas. He had recently linked up with one of his old comrades who had helped him put millions into a new investment, one he wanted Lotus to help him with. His plan was to use their connection to his advantage.
“I figured since I’m Hector’s son you would help me.”
Lotus was taken aback. “Help you? Help you with what?”
Jay knew what he said next was going to send Lotus into a fury. “I need a warehouse,” he told him, quickly.
“Oh no,” Lotus said, taking off his seatbelt. “Stop the car, Arnold. Pull over.”
Jay unbuckled his seatbelt as well. He grabbed Lotus’ shoulder, in an attempt to calm him down. “Lotus, come on, listen to me. I know you helped me with this before, but I need another one. I mean, you sold me the building for Blue Magic. I’m making honest of the restaurant, aren’t I? I promise you, I will—” Jay was interrupted as Lotus screamed in his ear.
“Are you out of your mind? What are you getting into now?”
“I can’t go to anybody with this project. I don’t need a lot of ears or eyes on this. I trust you, Lotus. I know you won’t publicize this sale like you do the others. I know you will take the warehouse out of your company’s listings way before the sale is even complete.”
Lotus shook his head, nervously. He knew if Jay was asking for a warehouse then there was probably some illegal operation about to go down inside of it. The last time he had sold him one, he ended up using the space to house illegal drugs and weapons. Now, he wanted one again. Certain Jay was still running a drug cartel, Lotus didn’t want anything to do with it. His days of working alongside a criminal enterprise were long gone.
